Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe And The Perks Of Being...
ââ¬Å"Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind donââ¬â¢t matter and those who matter donââ¬â¢t mind.â⬠- Dr. Seuss. Suessââ¬â¢s quote can be interpreted as advice to be yourself and not try too hard to please other people. Trying to satisfy everyone is impossible and will only lead to self-destruction and demolition as a result of not being who you are and instead being who others want you to be. In the novels Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, both authors demonstrate that human instinct is to please others, however that normally ends in pain; this is shown through Okonkwo, Nwoye, and Charlieââ¬â¢s actions. Okonkwo, from Things Fall apart, revolves his whole life around showing people he is strong, which leads to self-destruction. He starts to feel the need to be important when his father, Unoka, was a joke to the village and seen, as Achebe writes, ââ¬Å"Unoka in his day was lazy and improvident and a debtor.â⬠(Achebe, page 4) to show how the people viewed him. True, that he was unlike other men in the village and did not take much seriously; however he did enjoy the little things, ââ¬Å"He loved this season of the year, when the rains had stopped and the sun rose every morning with dazzling beauty...And he loved the first kites that returned with the dry season.â⬠(page 5). Unoka did not care what other people thought, and he was content with his life. While change can be intimidating, change can be both positive and negative in different aspects.
